About the artwork
The original artwork is a 3metre mural that I painted in the Potocki Paterson Art Gallery, in the 5 days leading up to my First Solo Exhibition. I painted each day between 2pm-2am, which comes to 60 hours for this painting (creation video below). For this mural I started with a contemporary exploration of the mandala in the middle, exploding out into free-flowing fractal organised chaos. In this artwork I explored ideas surrounding the Anthropocene - the new geological epoch we have entered into, characterised by human influence and destruction. I am fascinated in the ways we can use artwork to create connection, reminding people of our immense interconnectivity with our earth, with each other, with our whole universe. This contrasts with typical imagery of the Anthropocene - of melting icebergs, overflowing landfills, poverty and war. Not that these images aren't important and powerful - but we are increasingly desensitised to this media and can feel a sense of disconnection or helplessness. Through my artwork, especially pieces like this mural, I hope to inspire a sense of connection between people and the bigger picture of which we are apart of, in an immersive, positive, constructive manner.
